Pineapple julep with Ritual Zero Proof

Pineapple Julep with Ritual Zero Proof

You absolutely need zero-proof options in your home (or apartment) bar.

Non-alcoholic spirits may have been considered a “trend” at one point, but there’s really nothing trendy about it—it’s now a necessity.

People choose not to drink for a number of reasons, but whatever the case, having zero-proof spirits options on hand is about inclusivity, and variety.

Enter Ritual Zero Proof.

Ritual Zero Proof

Ritual is an award-winning, American-made, non-alcoholic spirit brand based in Chicago, IL (my hometown so brownie points there).

They have three primary zero-proof expressions: Tequila Alternative, Gin Alternative, and Whiskey Alternative. All options are non-GMO, gluten free, low carb, and close to zero sugar. In essence, it’s about as close as you can get to the real thing—minus the guilt.

Below are the tasting notes and flavor profiles of each expression as described by Ritual:

Tequila Alternative
Blue agave flower, Mexican lime, tropical guava, cracked sea salt, charred oak, mesquite smoke, black peppercorn, capsicum fruit, prickly ash, green bell pepper.

Gin Alternative
Siberian pine, coriander berries, Angelica root, sweet basil,  English cucumber, juniper berries, green lemongrass, capsicum fruit, green peppercorn, prickly ash, peppermint leaf.

Whiskey Alternative
American oak, Madagascar vanilla, capsicum fruit, sugar floss, mesquite smoke, warm caramel,, green peppercorn, prickly ash, toasted spices.

After tasting through each one, I really feel all three spirit alternatives are great in their own respect. Though one could potentially sip each one neat, or on ice if that’s your preference, I find they go best in a no-ABV cocktail, and the options are extensive.

You can mix up a number of classic cocktails like a gimlet, margarita, daiquiri, whiskey sour, and other citrus-based drinks or more spirit-forward options like an old fashioned, sazerac, manhattan, mint julep, and more.

For me, the Whiskey Alternative stood out. There aren’t a lot of zero-proof spirit options available that allow you to mix up a spirit-forward cocktail (minus the spirit) that both tastes good and maintains a similar flavor profile to the original. As a result, most non-alcoholic cocktails are usually limited to citrus-based drinks, but having a Whiskey Alternative allows for more variety.

With the warmer months of the year approaching, I put together a variation on one of my favorite spirit-forward classics—a mint julep. This recipe incorporates a pineapple syrup that meshes really well with the fresh mint, and highlights the tasting notes of Ritual Whiskey Alternative.

The full recipe breakdown is below. Cheers!
